People Skirt
You know how in the ‘50s people wore poodle skirts? Well, I had a little fun with irony and made a people skirt for my poodle, Bonbon. I just made it to cover her top, because her legs are short, so she doesn’t have all that much clearance and a skirt would make it even harder for her. She is also 21 inches around, but you can change the pattern to fit another size dog.
Here’s how I did it:
Materials:
-US size 8 (5 mm) straight knitting needles
-1 skein Caron Simply Soft Yarn in Black (A)
-1 skein Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in any shade of pink you like (B)
-Yarn or tapestry needle
Top part:
Cast on 44 sts using A.
Work in k1, p1 rib until work measures 2 inches.
Switch to B and work 2 rows in stockinette stitch.
Next row: * k1, m1 by picking up and knitting the bar in between the sts, k1 * repeat from * to the end of the row.
Now work in stockinette st until work measures 9 ½ in. (or however long it needs to be to cover up your dog’s rear)
Work in garter st for 4 rows.
Cast off all sts.
Now, using A, use your tapestry needle to create the stick person at the bottom right corner, above where you start the garter st.
Bottom band:
Cast on 44 sts using A.
Work in k1, p1 rib until work measures 2 inches.
Cast off.
Now, sew the side seams together of the black band.
Put the skirt on your dog and let them strut their stuff!
Clever - I love it!
